Whatever your go-to spiritual practice may be, having a designated space in your home for it will only help you develop the consistency you need. Every time you inhabit this space, it will set a tone that promotes presence, focuses your attention, and strengthens your awareness. So, if you feel your spiritual life needs a boost, here are some ways to make sure your space is set up optimally to create an atmosphere that’s sure to encourage your practice and help you thrive.

The Space & Ambiance

Whether you’re utilizing a spare room, or simply a corner of a room, you’ll want to choose a space that’s free from distraction and out of public view. It’s difficult to get into a quiet and reflective frame of mind in the midst of chaos and chatter or while on display.Another important consideration is the color palette you choose. Scientific studies have yielded useful information about the way color influences our mood, and you’ll definitely want to steer clear of bold or vibrant tones, as they can be overly stimulating. Instead look to natural landscapes for palette inspiration – consider blues, greens, light purples, and soft pinks, as they’ve been shown to have a soothing effect. No matter what hue you choose, take time to experiment with color — make your space personal and discover what truly works for you.

Sitting

Have a floor cushion, seat, or folded blanket to support your posture while sitting. Avoid the temptation to lie down, if possible, as this will often unintentionally lead to sleep — and a nap is different from meditation. By maintaining a place on the floor that promotes proper posture, you can create a healthy habit of avoiding positions that do not serve your practice.

Lighting

Instead of direct overhead lights in your meditation space, consider diffused indirect lighting from a lamp or sconce, for their softer ambiance. Candles are another great option, as they can add a spirit of ceremony to your practice.

Soothe The Senses

When creating your space, consider all five senses. Bring in your favorite flowers, plants, or even a bowl of fruit to complement the space. Hang artwork or images that bring you joy. Light your favorite scented candle, incense, or plug in an essential oil diffuser. While I prefer silence in my meditation practice, I know plenty of people, who incorporate music, chanting or natural sounds to heighten their connection or shift the energy in the room.
Spirituality is the path to the heart, and you can prioritize it by creating a special space that supports your conscious contact with your true self. With a bit of effort, your home can become your sanctuary, a place of refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Create a space that you’re connected to and find beautiful, one that’ll make you think to yourself “Oh, this makes me happy!” It’s the things that evoke this kind of reaction that most speak to your soul.
Blue skies,
